Forcing SSL to www.classe.cornell.edu

In response to a Cornell security audit, the CLASSE IT group will be forcing SSL (https) for all connections to our central web server - www.classe.cornell.edu. This will ensure that any basic HTML authentication configured by our users in their personal web pages is appropriately encrypted. This change should be transparent to all visitors to www.classe.cornell.edu.

For information on creating and managing your personal home pages, please see PersonalHomePages .

Please use www.classe.cornell.edu when accessing the Lab's Web server. Use of the older www.lepp.cornell.edu or www.lns.cornell.edu URLs will cause error messages about a name mismatch for the Web server's security certificate. Links in Web pages might need to be changed.

Zoom online web and video conferencing service now available

Zoom is a full-featured online web and video conferencing service. Like WebEx, it offers online meetings and webinars. During the rest of the fiscal year CIT will support both WebEx and Zoom, but we will be encouraging WebEx users to make the switch to Zoom starting with an email that will be sent to WebEx users in November. For more information on Zoom features, trainings, and differences between WebEx and Zoom read more: http://itnews.cornell.edu/Ziz

Connect new devices with caution

Unfortunately, when it comes to connecting to the Internet, just because something is offered for sale doesn't mean it's secure out of the box. When connecting a new product to your home network, you may need to make it safe by changing default passwords or taking other steps to prevent the chance it could be taken over from the outside world. http://itnews.cornell.edu/ZiD

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
