Compute Farm Reduced Capacity: 23-Aug-2021 to 25-Aug-2021

Starting Monday, 23-Aug-2021 @ 8:00 AM, most CLASSE Compute Farm batch queues will be disabled in advance of a Wilson Lab East Module power outage on Wednesday, 25-Aug-2021. Please note that interactive and CHESS queues are excluded from this two-day pre-outage pause; jobs running in these queues will instead be terminated early morning on Wednesday, 25-Aug-2021, when the East Module power is cut. Power is expected to be restored by midday.

Any terminated jobs can be resubmitted immediately to the "all.q" and "interactive.q" queues for continued processing throughout the power outage. This continuity of service is made possible by two new farm nodes that have been deployed in Wilson 221. However, farm capacity will be severely degraded, so you may need to wait for resources to become available before your job is scheduled.

macOS Mojave Deprecation

If you have a CLASSE-managed Mac running macOS Mojave (10.14.x), please submit a ServiceRequest to schedule a macOS upgrade as soon as convenient. Starting this fall, macOS Mojave will no longer be supported by Apple, and we have seen some problems with Mojave security updates that make it impossible to log in with CLASSE credentials. To check your version of macOS, select "About This Mac" under the Apple menu () in the upper left corner of your screen. The upgrade process takes around half a day and may require you to bring your Mac to the lab.

PSA: Cornell Password Management Service

According to one estimate, the average person has 100 passwords to remember. Since 2018, Cornell has provided a secure password management service called LastPass to all members of the Cornell community. Instead of storing your passwords directly in your web browser, we encourage you to use a central service like LastPass, which can facilitate the process of migrating from one browser to another (e.g. from Firefox to Vivaldi).

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
