Autodesk Inventor Upgrade: Tuesday, 15-Jan-2019
On Tuesday, 15-Jan-2019, Autodesk Inventor will be upgraded to SP4.7 during the weekly maintenance window (starting at 2:00 AM) on CLASSE-managed Windows computers. Any active Inventor processes will be terminated to allow the upgrade to happen. Please save all your Inventor work before going home on Monday. The Inventor Users mailing list has been notified.
Compute Farm Outage: Starting Friday, 18-Jan-2019 @ 5:00 PM
On Friday, 18-Jan-2019, at 5:00 PM, we will disable the Compute Farm queues in preparation for an upgrade to the network and to the SGE queue management software. Submissions of new jobs will be suspended until the upgrades are complete on Tuesday, 22-Jan-2019. Jobs that are running when the queues are disabled will continue to run to completion.
Wilson Lab East Module Network Outage: Tuesday, 22-Jan-2019 @ 10:00 AM
On Tuesday, 22-Jan-2019, at 10:00 AM, we will be upgrading the network to the Wilson Lab East Module to a 40 Gb fiber connection. During this upgrade, the CLASSE Computer Farm and users in the East Module will have no network connections. Since this upgrade includes a small reconfiguration of the central CLASSE network switch, there is a chance that internal CLASSE networks will also be affected. If we encounter any problems, we will roll back the changes so that network service is restored by the end of the maintenance window at 12:00 noon.
Upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10
As mentioned in a
previous newsletter, CLASSE-IT is ending general support for Windows 7 on 01-Jun-2019, less than five months from now. All Windows 7 computers will be disconnected from the CLASSE network at that time. We have been contacting Windows 7 users to schedule an upgrade to Windows 10 (or to discuss other options). Some older computers are incapable of running Windows 10 and will need to be replaced. If you have not been contacted yet, please submit a
ServiceRequest -- it is important not to wait until the last minute to start the process. Thank you!
"Windows Not Genuine"
In the past week, some Windows 7 users have received a "Windows Not Genuine" pop-up notice on their computers. This problem affects Windows 7 computers worldwide and has been reported by multiple units at Cornell. To mitigate the problem, please submit a
ServiceRequest, and we will pursue one of two options:
- Upgrade to Windows 10, if possible (see above).
- Attempt to reset the activation. This will take about 15 minutes, and you will need to log out. We do not yet know if this will work in all cases.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
