Virtual Machine Cluster Upgrade: Tuesday, 23-Jul-2019 @ 10:00 AM
On Tuesday, 23-Jul-2019, between 10:00 AM and 12:00 noon, we will upgrade the CLASSE Virtual Machine (VM) cluster to the latest release of the oVirt virtualization software with improved support for Windows 10. The CLASSE VM cluster provides many central services, such as printing, networked licenses,
AppsAnywhere,
ScreenConnect, and
WinAPP2. We do not anticipate any service interruptions, but any VM reboots will be announced on the
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L mailing list.
Windows 10 Update Failures
In the past two weeks, we have seen a few instances of Windows 10 updates gone wrong, resulting in computers that will not boot after a Tuesday update. In such cases, we need to re-install the Windows 10 operating system, which wipes any files stored on the local disk. To guard against such failures, please save all your files and bookmarks to a central filesystem (a.k.a samba). For more information about central storage, please see
DataStewardship.
Videoconferencing in Wilson Commons
To enable videoconferencing in the Wilson Commons, we have permanently installed a Logitech conference camera and audio system for use with Zoom and other videoconferencing platforms. This setup is similar to those in Wilson 301 and 374. Please report any problems by submitting a
ServiceRequest.
Helpful Tip: Projecting From Laptops
If you connect your laptop to a conference room projector, and nothing happens, try rebooting your laptop
with the projector cable attached. Doing so will reset the HDMI or VGA port on your laptop, which may have been automatically disabled by the operating system.
General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our
NewsLetter and via
CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.
Unless other arrangements have been made,
CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see
SystemExpectations.
