NoMachine Update: Tuesday, 10-Oct-2023

If you are a NoMachine user, at the end of TODAY, Monday, 09-Oct-2023, please save your work and log out of any NoMachine Virtual Desktops. On Tuesday, 10-Oct-2023, starting at 4:00 AM, all NoMachine servers will be updated to the latest release. When this update occurs, remote connections will be interrupted and all NoMachine Virtual Desktops will be deleted. Please submit a ServiceRequest with any questions or concerns.

NoMachine Cloud Server Reconfiguration: Tuesday, 10-Oct-2023

Starting Tuesday 10-Oct-2023, the NoMachine cloud server will be reconfigured so that users only see the computers they need to connect to. This should make things easier for all of you (and our remote CHESS users), decrease the chance of "unapproved" remote use of workstations dedicated to other tasks, and bring our NoMachine setup more in line with how ScreenConnect works.

We have collected lists of which computers users have already logged into, but please submit a ServiceRequest if you lose access to a computer you need access to after next Tuesday.

Potential Service Interruptions: Tuesday, 10-Oct-2023 @ 10:00 AM

At 10:00 AM on Tuesday, 10-Oct-2023, maintenance will be conducted on the CLASSE virtual machine cluster. Although no interruptions are expected, you may experience a momentary pause in access to the following servers and services.

GitLab Update: Tuesday, 10-Oct-2023 @ 10:30 AM

On Tuesday, 10-Oct-2023, at 10:30 AM, the CLASSE GitLab will be unavailable for approximately one hour for a series of updates. Please submit a ServiceRequest if you have any questions or concerns.

Zoom on Scientific Linux 7

Zoom has announced that starting in November 2023, Scientific Linux 7 will no longer be supported. If you are using Zoom on your Linux laptop, please submit a ServiceRequest to schedule a time to upgrade your operating system to Alma 9.

macOS Sonoma Release

Apple officially released the macOS Sonoma (macOS 14) operating system on 26-Sep-2023. However, CLASSE services have not yet been evaluated for compatibility with this new operating system, so we are not upgrading CLASSE-managed Macs to Sonoma at this time.
See https://wiki.classe.cornell.edu/Computing/SkipSonoma for details on how to avoid upgrading your Mac to Sonoma
Furthermore, it is expected that Apple will drop official support for macOS Big Sur (macOS 11) around November, so CLASSE-managed Macs will be upgraded at that time to newer operating systems as necessary, for compliance with the Cornell University Policy on Information Security.

New Printers in Wilson and Newman Labs

We have deployed new Xerox multifunction printers with the following queue names:
  • Wilson 229: w229_xrx_c7130
  • Wilson 135 (CHESS Ops): chess-ops_xrx_c315
  • Newman 123: n123_xrx_c7130
More information about these printers is available at PrinterList. Please report any problems by submitting a ServiceRequest.

General network and server maintenance will occur every Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. The CLASSE-IT group will always announce any expected disruptions in our NewsLetter and via CLASSE-IT-NEWS-L, but with the size and complexity of our network there is always the potential for something to go wrong. We will do our best to contain all network maintenance and planned outages to Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM.

Unless other arrangements have been made, CLASSE-managed Windows systems may be updated and rebooted on Tuesday morning at 2:00 AM, so please avoid critical or lengthy operations at that time. For more details, please see SystemExpectations.
